Derby Cocktail Co. interviews winemaker, hunting buddy, and rebel with a cause, Chris Christensen of Bodkin Wines.
Stag Dining first crossed paths with Chris when Matthew and he met at Presidio Graduate School’s commencement party at Medlock Ames Winery. Over drinks and stories, they soon realized they were both avid hunters. It didn’t take long for Chris to become a hunting buddy of the Stags and the relationship, although sadly not their hunting record, has gone strong ever since. Chris started Bodkin wines in 2011 and and has been Derby’s house white wine over the past 5 months. Stag has also hosted him as the winemaker at two of our Clandestine Dinners, Buckshot and Blanc in September of 2012 and Buckshot and Bordeaux in April in 2012. Both events were most fittingly held at the Pacific Rod and Gun Club in San Francisco.
Bodkin’s Bio (in his own words): After spending 8 years doing winery cellar work —dragging hoses, lifting heavy objects, and cleaning like a janitor — Chris Christensen, a native Iowan and former rower/Communication major at Stanford, finally earned his Master’s Degree in Enology from the Real World’s School of Hard Knocks. With his fictitious degree in a lavish frame from DollarTree and a harvest abroad working for BK Wines in South Australia under his belt, he launched Bodkin Wines in the Fall of 2011. With a focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Christensen strives to make wines that are finessed; steeped in light, floral, fruity flavors and aromas in balance with a lively presence on the palate. In addition to making table wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Canelli, Bodkin is also home to California’s First Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc™.
Find Chris’ wine at Derby Cocktail Company’s tent every Friday at Off the Grid Fort Mason.
